Fullness and Shape: Check the Balsam Coverage

Hold the wreath up at arm's length and look at the shape from the front and the side. A quality wreath should have:

● An even round shape, without one side looking heavier than the other

● Balsam tips packed tightly enough that the metal ring is covered

● Enough depth to stand out from the door instead of sitting thin against it

Mass-produced wreaths often show thin spots where the builder used fewer tips to move faster. The balsam may sit heavy on one side while another area looks sparse. That usually means the wreath was made quickly instead of built bough by bough.

Rockdale wreaths are hand-tied in layers so the balsam covers the frame and gives the wreath shape from the front, side, and back.

The Big-Box Trap: Why Cheaper Isn't Better

We understand the temptation. You're at the store, you see a wreath for $15, and you think, "Good enough."

But here is what that cheaper wreath may really mean:

Freshness: A big-box wreath may have been cut weeks earlier. A Rockdale wreath is shipped soon after harvest.

Construction: Many store wreaths are single-sided and loosely assembled. Rockdale wreaths are double-sided and hand-tied.

Needle retention: A dry wreath may shed within days. A fresh Maine balsam wreath can hold well through much of the Christmas season when it is kept cool and misted.

Fragrance: Older greenery can smell faint or dry. Fresh balsam should carry that clean Maine Christmas scent when it comes out of the box.

Fullness: A rushed wreath can look thin and flat. A Rockdale wreath is built with enough balsam to feel dense, full, and sturdy.

Source: Many low-cost wreaths come through large retail distribution. Rockdale wreaths come from our farm crew and Maine wreath makers.

That $15 wreath may look fine in the parking lot and still be brown or bare by mid-December. A Rockdale wreath has a higher starting price, but it gives you fresh balsam scent, door presence, and pride every time you come home.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy

Whether you're shopping online or in person, these questions will help you spot the difference between a rushed wreath and a well-built one:

● ✅ When was this wreath cut? If they cannot tell you, that is a problem.

● ✅ Is it single-sided or double-sided? Choose double-sided if you want fullness and better coverage.

● ✅ What species of greenery is used? Balsam fir is our preferred Christmas greenery.

● ✅ Where was it grown? Maine balsam is known for its fragrance, color, and Christmas tradition.

● ✅ Is it handmade or machine-assembled? Hand-tied wreaths usually have better shape and density.

● ✅ How is it shipped? Speed matters because fresh-cut greenery starts drying once it leaves the tree.
