Measure Your Door Before Ordering a Wreath

Measure the door before you order from Rockdale Wreaths. A wreath that looks large on the bench in the shop can look small once it is hanging, and one that is too wide will cover the window or the knocker. Write down the width and the height. Include the frame. Our wreaths are balsam fir, made on our Maine farm.

Why Size Matters

Start with the width of the door. A 36 inch door and a double door do not take the same wreath. A barn door or a Dutch door is different again, because the glass or the split changes where the wreath can hang. A wide entry with sidelights can carry a larger wreath. A narrow door cannot. If the wreath is too small, the door looks bare. If it is too big, it hits the molding.

How to Measure Your Door

What you need: a tape measure, and a phone or a scrap of paper to write the numbers on.

Measuring your door: Measure the width first, then the height. Include the frame both ways. Molding around the door takes space the wreath cannot use, so note how wide that trim is. Measure from the top of the door to the bottom of the frame.

The rest of the entry: If the door has sidelights or a deep porch, look at the whole entry, not only the door slab. A larger balsam fir wreath holds its place there. Lights or a pot of greens beside the door are separate from the wreath size. They do not change the width you just measured.

Choosing the Right Size Wreath

Consult our Wreath Size Guide after you have the width:

• 24-inch wreath: This is the size for a door about 30 to 36 inches wide. It sits in the middle of the door and leaves the window clear.
• 30-inch wreath: Use this when the door is wider than a standard slab, or when sidelights make the entry look bigger than the door alone.
• 36-inch wreath: This is for a wide entrance. It may have to be a special order. Ask us before you count on it for a date.

Tips for a Festive Look

A dark door can take a classic red bow. If the door is thicker than a regular slab, the hook may need a longer hanger so the wreath clears the frame.

If you want to pick the bow and the greens yourself, use create your own. Care is on the card that ships with the order. Hang the wreath out of direct sun. Do not hang it between a storm door and the main door. That gap heats up, and the balsam dries out.
